Residential Garage Door Sizes: What Homeowners Need to Know

Posted on August 19th, 2025

When planning a garage build or remodel, many of our customers wonder: What size garage door do I need? Choosing the right fit isn’t just about aesthetics. The size of your garage door affects everything from daily convenience to home value.

In this guide, we’ll break down:

  • The typical residential garage door sizes
  • Factors that may impact your decision
  • How custom options can give your garage the perfect finishing touch

Standard Residential Garage Door Sizes

Most residential garage doors come in a handful of standard dimensions. These sizes are designed to fit typical garage layouts across the country.

Single Garage Door Sizes

  • Width: 8 ft, 9 ft, or 10 ft
  • Height: 7 ft or 8 ft

Single garage doors are ideal for one-vehicle setups and are commonly sized at 8×7 ft or 9×7 ft. These dimensions work well for standard sedans, compact SUVs, and light trucks.

If you drive a larger vehicle or simply want more clearance, consider sizing up to a 10-ft-wide or 8-ft-tall door. In some regions, such as Florida, 10×8 ft doors for 1-car garages are increasingly popular for custom homes.

Double Garage Door Sizes

  • Width: 16 ft or 18 ft
  • Height: 7 ft or 8 ft

Double garage doors are designed to accommodate two vehicles parked side-by-side. While 16×7 ft is the most common size, opting for an 18-ft wide door gives you extra clearance. This larger option is ideal for wider vehicles, easier entry and exit into your two-car garage, or additional storage space along the walls.

Oversized and Custom Garage Doors

  • Width: 10 ft to 20+ ft
  • Height: 9 ft to 12+ ft

For RVs, boats, lifted trucks, or commercial vans, standard sizes won’t cut it. You’ll need an oversized garage door to ensure proper clearance. Doors this large typically require specialized framing and heavier-duty hardware. But the beauty of custom garages is that you can get the perfect configuration for your needs.

At Indiana Garage Guys, we design and build garages specifically to match your vehicle’s size and your home’s structure. No compromises necessary!

Garage Door Sizing Guide: How to Choose the Right Fit

Choosing the right garage door isn’t just about filling an opening. It’s also about matching your garage to your vehicles, lifestyle, and property layout. Here’s how to find the perfect fit, whether you’re building new or remodeling.

1. Match the Door Size to Your Vehicles

The size of your car, truck, or recreational vehicle should guide the width and height of your garage door.

  • Standard vehicles (sedans, crossovers, small trucks): A single door sized 8×7 ft or 9×7 ft is usually sufficient.
  • Larger vehicles (full-size SUVs, work trucks): Consider upsizing to a 10-ft wide or 8-ft tall door for better clearance.
  • Specialty vehicles (RVs, boats, lifted trucks): You’ll need an oversized door, often 10–20 ft wide and up to 12 ft tall or more.

Keep in mind that extra-large doors require reinforced framing, stronger tracks, and higher-powered openers. If you choose to install an extra-large door, we will modify your garage accordingly.

2. Choose the Right Layout: Single or Double Doors

After identifying the right size for your vehicle, the next step is to decide how you want your garage door(s) configured. Most homeowners choose between:

  • One double door – Ideal for two-car garages that are 18 ft wide or more, this layout provides a wide, unobstructed entryway and simplifies automation with a single opener. It’s especially convenient for households with multiple drivers or larger vehicles.
  • Two single doors – Best suited for garages that are 22 ft wide or wider, this configuration adds symmetry and curb appeal while also offering heating and cooling benefits.

Both layouts work well for everyday use. If you’re driving larger vehicles or just want extra clearance, you can always size up individual doors to 9×8 ft for added maneuverability.

3. Don’t Overlook Door Height

Most garage doors are 7 ft tall, but increasing to 8 ft gives you more headroom and flexibility. In some areas, taller doors are even required by code.

4. Build Around Your Space (Or Customize It)

Whether you’re working within existing walls or starting from scratch, we’ll help you make the most of your layout. Our 28-point custom garage process ensures your door is tailored to your vehicles, preferences, and long-term plans.

Measuring for the Right Fit

To determine what size garage door you need, a few key dimensions must be measured:

  • Rough Opening – Width and height of the framed opening.
  • Headroom – Space between the top of the opening and the ceiling.
  • Sideroom – Space on either side for mounting tracks and hardware.
  • Backroom – Ceiling depth required for door travel and opener.

Need help measuring? Don’t worry. We handle all measurements and planning as part of every custom build or remodel project.
